The Situation in Sitges - A Day Trip
Sitges probably conjures images of Greek statue-like bodies clad in something slightly more than a fig leaf. And it is. But it is much more too. As a gay family of 5, there are obvious reasons why we would fit in and "3" reasons why we wouldn't. Surprisingly, with playgrounds on land and water, pizzerias and gelato shops galore, and a tourist train ride, there is much to do for a family day trip. The drive in from our base hotel Le Meridien Ra in Calafell, was a pleasant 30-ish minute drive. Here's what we did, and other options too:
for about 20 Euro for the day, there is a great parking garage off of Avigunda Sofia and Pg. Maritim
5 minute walk south from parking is Platja de la Bassa Rodona. Busy beach reminiscent of the seal-crowded dock of San Francisco (except with Greek statues). Great soft, sand beach with sand banks letting the kids venture out and wallow in the waves!
Take a touristic train ride along the coast (about 1/2 an hour round trip) and see different beaches, great real estate. It was 4 Euro per person. The two 4 year-olds were free.
Try the playground/obstacle course floating on the Mediterranean
Hire a VW inspired paddle boat complete with water slide
Ice cream and pizzerias galore make for child-friendly feeding
Markets of course but with only a couple of hours, we focussed on the beach!
Sitges is where gay, straight, couples, singles, families and anything in between congregate to freely enjoy the sand, surf, and sun. A must visit for a day - longer if you can! Click to see the slide show below!
