Roussillon: The Other Red Planet
Fancy an out of this world experience? Then trek le Sentier des Ocres de Roussillon. The former quarry turned nature preserve certainly evokes scenes from Matt Damon's "The Martian."
A choice of two very walkable paths, one 35 minutes and the other 50 minutes, provide incredible vistas, information about the region's unique vegetation, and the geological minerals that have led to much of Rousillon's ochre inspired arts and crafts. All for 2.50 euro - kids under 8 are free!
Park your car in the adjacent lot for the day for 3 euro. Then explore the village which offers pleasant walks along its historical roads, magnificent mountain top views, and of course a nice ice creamery, a reward for your petite promenade.
The ochre is used as a colorant so be wary of wearing white during this hike. Other than that, simply enjoy the atmosphere of being on the red planet right here sur la Terre. Click on the pics!
