Figuring out Figueres
While it was meant to only be a "pit stop" to join our friends at a beautiful villa in nearby Cadaques, Figueres proved to be a cool little city with a wonderful "hidden treasure." Our Air BnB apartment hosted by Jose was large, comfortable, and centrally located within high-end stores, playgrounds, tasty pastry and gelato shops, restaurants and public concerts in the square, and the biggest treasure of them all, Castel Sant Ferran. I say biggest because it actually is the largest bastion fort in Europe. For 15 euro (kids 4 and under are free), you get a guided tour. It was really cool riding in the military style open top jeep (felt like something out of Jurassic Park!), and best of all a boat tour of the fort's underbelly - water tunnels. The cistern system was really cool and provided for a very different tour experience that even the kids really enjoyed. Another highlight for them was probably the spelunking helmets complete with "headlight!" Best of all, it wasn't overrun by tourists - you might feel you have the whole place to yourself! There's also a nice, reasonably priced restaurant (2 courses, wine, coffee 10 euro). Click through the pics below for this really highly recommended experience.
